Cork 20 International Rally Superb win for Midletons Darragh O' Riordan and success for Imokilly Motor Club and Youghals Jason Ryan.

This Year’s Cork 20 rally was all about East Cork and in particular Darragh O' Riordan in the Subaru Impreza who took a fantastic win on the event to make it two wins in the Tarmac Championship for Darragh and his co driver Tony McDaid , From the start Darragh was near the front and as the tricky night stages ended he was perfectly placed to pile on the pressure on Sunday . That the Midleton man did in fine style holding his head but remaining at the top of the time sheets it was a fantastic end to the Tarmac Championship and showed that Darragh the man from Midleton is now one of the top drivers in the country with a win in The Rally of the Lakes earlier in the year and the win on the Cork 20 the first Cork man since Billy Coleman in the Metro in 1986,with all that and other good results a super second in the Tarmac Championship was achieved this is the year that Darragh O Riordan established himself as a house hold name in Irish Rallying.

Jason Ryan in the Kia Motors Youghal Civic had a fantastic rally and won the modified section of the rally initially second to the 330bhp Escort of Davy Armstrong Jason upped his pace on the Sunday and on one stage took a massive 27 seconds out of Armstrong to win in fine style in the nimble Civic a spongy brake pedal caused a few moments but it was a great victory for Jason and his times on the stages would have put him into the top 10 overall.
Jason Ryan / Tadgh O Sullivan modified winners Cork 20 International Rally.

For the Imokilly Motor Club it was a tough weekend running the spectator stage of the Cork 20 ment many lads spent from 12 in the morning till near 12 at night setting up and cleaning up after the stage was run . However for the even more dedicated after the clean up the lads headed for the Macroom area to be on the stages before 6 in the morning so it was an all nighter for the lads who while tired knew their contribution to the Cork 20 rally made it happen.Quickest of the IMC competitors was once again Allen Treacy third overall in the National section of the rally his times were also good enough for a top ten spot in the main field . Going hard in the Honda Civic was James Fitzgerald and Eoin Fitzgerald taking a class win and Michael Murphy and Patsy Cashman had a good run in the Corolla .In the main field Brian O Keeffe had a good run and was 10th overall in his Gp N Impreza.

Jason Ryan wins Kartmania.ie Imokilly Motor Club Rally Sprint.

Black clouds did little to spoil a great win for the Youghal driver Jason Ryan, Jason who has not always had the best of luck took a well-deserved win today in his home build Kia Motors Youghal Starlet.

The day was mostly dry but the rain did make the difference ,over the first run Davy Armstrong in the 300 + bhp Escort was looking sharp and was a mere .9 of a second up on Jason after the first run , run two destroyed it for Armstrong when a fellow competitor took out the timing gear Armstrong had to get a rerun sadly for him this happened during the only big shower of rain during the day, the time lost here could never be made up and Armstrong while being quicker on 4 of the 5 runs was never going to be able to make up the 8 seconds he lost in the wet.

Keith Power in the super 1600 Clio was generally just marginally slower than Ryan and on the 4th run was even quicker but at the end of the day second by 2.4 seconds showed there was little in it.

Third was Armstrong and 4th was a great drive by Allen Treacy in the Corolla always the front running two wheel drive man from the (IMC ) Allen today was taking his neighbour Carmel for a spin he thought he was just a bit too sideways particularly when he had a bit of a moment on run 2 however he was more than happy with 4th place .

Brian O Keeffe was 5th he said from the start this track will suit a Civic or a Starlet it’s just too tight and twisty for my Subaru and he was right however he enjoyed his run on his home club event.

The rest of the top 10 included Luke McCarthy and Paul Brown in Civics with Michael Ryan in his Fiesta ninth and another IMC member William Walsh 10th

The day belonged to the Youghal man Jason Ryan in the Kia Motors Youghal Starlet it was Jason’s first outright win on an event however there was drama on the last run when as Jason pulled off the line some noticed the tyre looked a little soft Jason said I thought the car was a bit loose but I just kept driving it!!!!!!!!!!! As he came back in to the pit area the tyre was almost flat a 2” piece of metal was pulled out of the tyre, Jason said we had our bit of luck today.

The IMC ran a great event and Clerk of the Coarse Emmet Cronin said thanks to its hard working members and the support of Kartmania.ie also thanks to today’s competitors for a great days sport.

IMC Members Dominate Cork Motor Club Sprint

It was total domination by the Imokilly Motor Club on the recent Cork Motor Club Rally Sprint.Over all winner was Brian O'Keeffe in the GpN Subaru beating a WRC car and in third overall and showing he still is the quickest of the IMC 2 wheel drive boys was Allen Treacy.

It was two in a row for Brian having won last year, well done once again Brian from all of us at the IMC.

Well done also to our other club members Allen Treacy who finished 3rd overall and first in class 4 and to Pat Maguire with Joe Fitzgibbon on the notes who brought home the trophy for 2nd in class 9. Motorsport has never been stronger in the East Cork/ West Waterford area and here's to more of the same for the remainder of the year.
(Well done boys).Full report and photos follow.

O’Keeffe serves up Great Stuff on the double

Last year’s winner Brian O’Keeffe in his Subaru Impreza has won the Darren Swanton Memorial Cork City Rally sprint sponsored by Great Stuff Caterers for the second year in a row today. He used all his experience to bring his car home in less than one second ahead of runner up Jermery Drislane in his Subaru S6 WCR. Third place went to the first two wheel drive car of Allen Tracy in his Toyota Corolla. Around 2,000 people witnessed what was a very successful 2011 event which saw 58 cars tackle the 2.4km mixed surface track over seven runs. The sun shone down on this charity event which was run to raise funds for charity, Marymount Hospice being the main beneficiary along with Operation Uisce.

Brian O'Keeffe

The opening run was dominated by Owen Murphy, the current leader in Valvoline National Forestry Championship, in his Hankook Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 who went into an 8 second lead. He was the only competitor to break the 2 minute mark clocking a 1 min 54 sec time. Brian O’Keeffe was next with a 2 min 02 sec time while Mick Cremin was 2 sec slower to take third overall. Jason Ryan in his Honda Civic clocked an impressive 2 min 05 sec to put him fourth overall.

The second run saw major excitement with Owen Murphy spinning off and blocking the track on the last corner, affecting a number of following cars. Owen and the interrupted cars got another a second run at the end of the field which left Owen just 3 sec ahead of O’Keeffe. The third run proved to be the deciding lap with Murphy’s engine expiring leaving Waterford’s Brian O’Keeffe in control. He never relinquished his led again despite a serious challenge from Jermery Drislane. Jason Ryan was posting sub 2 min times to secure third place until the sixth run when a problem with the car 100 metres from the start line ended his challenge. Allen treacy was always there abouts and with his neat style of driving did enough to be the top 2wd car and third overall.

Allen Treacy

The remainder of the event saw O’Keeffe pacing himself for a finish while Drislane continued to push putting in the fastest times on runs 6 and 7. But it was not enough with O’Keeffe holding on by just 63 hundreds of seconds. It was an exciting finish to hard fought event and great credit must go to O’Keeffe for great tactical drive and to Drislane who put the fastest lap time in stopping the clocks at 1 min 47 sec on run 4. The first women home was Ciara Deasy in the Toyota Corolla followed by Niamh Ryan in a Peugeot 205.
